Instagram is often the first place a potential customer checks before they contact a business. But many business accounts make small mistakes that turn interested visitors away. Here are the seven we see most often, and how to fix them.
1. A bio that doesn't say what you do
Visitors decide in seconds whether to follow or leave. If your bio is a slogan or a list of emojis, they don't know if you're relevant. Fix: say what you do, who it's for and what to do next, in three short lines. For example: "Custom glass door hardware for distributors worldwide. Catalogue below. DM 'PRICE' for a quote."
2. No clear way to contact you
If someone has to search for your email, many won't bother. Fix: add a WhatsApp or website link in your bio, turn on contact buttons, and end posts with a clear next step.
3. Posting randomly
Posting five times one week and then nothing for a month makes an account look inactive. Fix: plan a month of content in advance and schedule it. Two to four posts a week, every week, beats bursts of activity.
4. Only product photos, no reels
Product photos are useful, but reels are how new people discover you. Fix: turn behind-the-scenes clips, product demos and customer questions into 10–30 second reels.
5. Captions that don't speak to your market
Machine-translated or generic captions make a brand feel distant. Fix: write captions for the country and customer you want, using their language, examples and hashtags.
6. Slow replies to comments and DMs
Every unanswered message is a potential customer going to a competitor. Fix: reply within hours, and set up automatic replies for common questions.
7. Not tracking what brings enquiries
Likes feel good, but enquiries pay the bills. Fix: check your insights monthly and note which posts led to DMs, website visits or WhatsApp messages. Make more of those.
